NFL defensive end Carl Nassib of the Las Vegas Raiders recently made history as the first ever active player to come out as gay in the league’s history. This act of bravery has made a tremendous impact on not only the sporting world, but on the LGBTQ community at large. In his Instagram video, Nassib states, "I just want to take a quick moment to say that I'm gay. I've been meaning to do this for a while now, but I finally feel comfortable enough to get it off my chest. I really have the best life; I've got the best family, friends and job a guy could ask for. I'm a pretty private person so I hope you guys know that I'm really not doing this for attention. I just think that representation and visibility are so important." In coming out, Nassib showed so many of us that we are legitimate as members of the LGBTQ community and that we can take pride in who we are. His strength is something we can all take example from. The support for Nassib since coming out has been overwhelming. The NFL has volunteered to match a $100,000 donation Nassib made to the Trevor Project as part of his announcement. Now it is being reported that Nassib’s jersey has become the top selling item throughout the entire league. Seeing such support for Nassib in a sport that has historically been seen as overtly macho and closed-minded shows just how much progress has been made in recent times. In a story that could have had a much different ending, we take great joy in reporting how positive the response to Nassib’s statement has been. Carl, we thank you for your bravery and the historic difference you’ve made for our community.
